Autumn Leaf - Tomfoolery Art Ring 2025

This one-of-a-kind 14ct gold ring is Issy’s interpretation of an English Oak tree, viewed from above as its leaves turn through autumn. A large brown Montana sapphire forms the centre of the design, surrounded by champagne diamonds, yellow sapphires and green tourmalines that trace the changing colours of the canopy.

The ring began with English Oak bark, foraged by Issy and cast directly in gold to retain its deeply fissured, tactile surface. Issy has shaped the cast bark into a sculptural 13mm form, using the natural cracks, crevices and contours as the landscape for the gemstones.

The arrangement follows the tree’s transition towards winter: greens give way to yellows and warmer tones before reaching the rich brown sapphire at the centre. The result brings together the weathered character of English Oak, the changing colours of the natural world and Issy’s own interpretation of the tree in a single showpiece design

Issy says about the ring: “In autumn, deciduous trees start the process of shedding their leaves, drawing nutrients back down to the roots, to help the tree survive the winter months. Often, the leaves at the top go first, turning to reds, oranges and yellows. Then the lower leaves start turning, as the tree fully embraces autumn. Finally, the leaves turn brown and fall – the tree is ready for the colder months ahead. This ring is my interpretation, from a bird’s eye view, of an English Oak tree in autumn.”
